Why do some roofs still look solid after 20 years while others leak in 5? The answer’s simpler than you think: select shingles. I’ve torn off hundreds of roofs, and 9 times out of 10, failed roofs used bargain materials. Let’s cut through the noise.
What Makes Select Shingles Different?
Standard shingles are like fast food – cheap now, expensive later. Select shingles use:
- Thicker asphalt layers (40% more than basic 3-tab shingles)
- Reinforced fiberglass matting that won’t crack in freeze-thaw cycles
- Algae-resistant granules that prevent black streaks
I’ve seen select shingles survive 100mph winds that ripped neighboring roofs to shreds. They’re not “fancy” – they’re armor.
Select Shingles vs. Standard: The Real Cost Breakdown
“But they cost more upfront!” Yeah, and replacing your roof twice costs 2.5x more. Here’s the math:
- Basic shingles: $4.50/sq ft installed (lasts 12-15 years)
- Select shingles: $6.80/sq ft installed (lasts 25-30 years)
Over 30 years? You’d replace standard shingles twice ($9/sq ft total) vs. one select shingles roof. Plus, insurance discounts for impact-resistant materials.
How to Spot Fake “Premium” Shingles
Not all thick shingles are equal. Look for:
- ASTM D3462 certification (wind resistance)
- UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating
- Algae resistance warranty (25+ years)
Last month, a client showed me “premium” shingles missing these stamps – they’d already curled at the edges. Select shingles without proper certifications are just expensive cardboard.
Installation Matters More Than You Think
Even select shingles fail with bad installation. Three non-negotiable musts:
- Ice & water shield: Full coverage in northern climates, not just 3 feet up
- Starter strips: Prevents wind lift at eaves
- Nail placement: 1/4” above the seal line – miss this, and shingles tear off in storms
I walked away from a $28k job last year because the contractor refused proper underlayment. Not risking your roof’s lifespan for shortcuts.
